WALZEN IRLE has been casting and manufacturing chilled cast iron rolls in the Siegerland region for 200 years. This special casting material, which of course has been further developed up to now, is mainly used in the plastic and paper industry. We are the specialist and market leader for the worldwide demand for these elaborate and sensitive large calender rolls.
The two peripherally drilled thermo rolls (Design : DuoTherm 200) are more than 14 m long, have a diameter of 1.35 m and a finish weight of 80 tons each. They are the largest rolls for the paper industry manufactured by Walzen Irle for more than 10 years. The casting compound required for this roll is approx. 100 tons and is in this enormous size not a typical standard for WALZEN IRLE.
For the production of writing, printing and copying paper with a width of up to 10.5 m the rolls run in a paper calender at a production speed of approx. 1800 m/min. This requires perfect concentricity down to the µm-range and absolutely smooth running (without any unbalance) in the installed paper machine.
The oil heated rolls extract the last water from the calendered paper and produce the required paper surface quality. The second large roll, also made of our special chilled cast iron, serves as a spare roll.
It takes up to 12 months to complete a roll of this size and type, from casting to final grinding and packing. The first of the two large rolls for the paper industry was delivered in November 2019. Delivery of the "sister roll" is scheduled for the end of January.
